Phishing. This isn’t a spelling mistake. We really are talking about phishing—it’s a thing. This play on the word “fishing” is an attempt to lure individuals into revealing sensitive personal information such as passwords, birthdates, account information, and Credit Card or social security numbers via email, text message, or phone calls. These “phisherman” know exactly what bait to reel you in. Phishing emails are easier to dodge with handy-dandy features such as spam filters. But what about text messages? Here’s an example of a phishing text message – AKA “Smishing.”
Scary, right? Phishing tactics like these are disguised to look legitimate and instill fear. The fraudsters prey on the quick panic, hoping they can contact you, gain your trust, and trick you into revealing your information. Imagine receiving this text message on your phone. You recognize the area code, and the first few digits are familiar. Always remember that looks can be deceiving. The fraudsters have done their research and are sending that message to thousands of numbers hoping to make the “big catch of the day.” Here’s what you can do to protect yourself:
- Don’t take the bait. Don’t call the number or follow any links, no matter how panicked you may be or how real it seems.
- Block the number.
- Use Card Control. Turn your cards on when you need them and off when you don’t.
