There has been a significant shift for many of us when it comes to work and home life. The number of individuals working from home for the first time this year—either full- or part-time—has increased dramatically. This change in the work environment brings new challenges, as well as new threats. This year for Cyber Security Awareness Month, we’ve compiled these 5 tips to help you be cyber smart.

  1. Secure your Wi-Fi Network. A primary entry point for cybercriminals is your wireless router. Once they’ve breached your network, they can gain access to every connected device. Changing the factory-set default Wi-Fi password and username, in addition to your router password, is an easy way to make sure you’re protected.
  2. Keep your software up-to-date. It’s important to update software to the latest version available. Most phones (and computers) have the option to turn on automatic updates and run regular security software scans. Taking these steps will help keep you protected.
  3. Know your apps. The number of appliances, toys, and devices controlled by apps continues to grow, increasing the risk of suspicious apps running in the background and gathering personal information without your knowledge. To protect yourself, use the “rule of least privilege.” Delete what you don’t need or no longer use, learn to say “no” when apps ask for permissions, and only download from a trusted source.
  4. Social media is a tool for fraud. Cybercriminals will search Google and scan social media sites to gather information about partners, vendors, human resources, and financial departments. It’s crucial not to overshare information about your work, conduct official business, or exchange payments through social media.
  5. Double-up on logins. Enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA) will help ensure that only you have access to your account information. Use MFAs for email, banking, social media, and other services that require you to log in. Check out the MFA Guide for more details.

By implementing these steps into your life, you’ll be able to do your part and #BeCyberSmart. For more cybersecurity information, check out the Be Cyber Secure At Work and Protecting Your Digital Home guides available from the Department of Homeland Security.
